Measuring Sense of Indebtedness in Second-Generation Immigrants in Switzerland

Abstract. Sense of indebtedness toward parents (SIP) refers to feelings debt give back for their migration-related sacrifices in second-generation immigrants. Based on Kang (2010), we developed a German SIP scale measure these feelings. The purpose this study was threefold: (1) provide evidence the theoretical factor structure underlying SIP, (2) test SIP’s measurement invariance four immigrant groups, and (3) shed light validity SIP. sample included N = 492 immigrants (66% female, M age 32.39, SD 10.46) Switzerland. results showed good reliability, confirmed one-factor model, supported partial scalar across groups. Further analysis provided discriminant incremental validity. Indebtedness Toward Parents is valuable contribution ongoing research intergenerational relations families.
